Week 3-Fashion

For our first day in fashion Sue asked us to bring a long sleeved shirt in. With this she told us she wanted us to put it on in an interesting way, e.g. upside down and back to front. This was so we could get an idea of different sillhouettes and shapes a garment could create.

She then asked us to fold the shirt into interesting flat shapes. Here i have added in what i came up with.

She asked us to pick one of the shapes and then trace it onto paper ande then cut it out. This became our basis for creating shapes on the mannequin. We then started pinning the paper onto the model to create shapes that werent neccessarily like anything that could be worn but but that could be the starting point for something interesting and/or wearable. Here is what i came up with:

Sue also asked us to pin the shapes onto the wall, add to it and then move it back to the mannequin but just sort of drop it on to the model to see what this created. However i found this very difficult and just couldnt picture anything in my head, so i didnt get anything out of this and quickly went back to the model. I was quite dissapointed in myself that i couldnt work like this but i do believe it is a very unique way of working and may only work for certain people.

I then came up with a shape that i really liked:

I thought this shoulder piece was a good starting point for something more so i started adding bits to it. I crumpled the paper i was adding to give it more texture and to match the shoulder piece, which was crumpled from how much work i had done to it and how much i had moved it around. After adding more and more pieces this is what i came up with:

I thought this could look really nice added onto a bodycon dress, to make it stand out more and look more unique.

On our third day we spent it mainly designing and getting our 3d design down onto 2d, on paper. I didnt draw my design as an actual garment but spent the day drawing it in different ways and styles just to see what it looked like as an illustration:

I also did a couple of collages to see what my design would look like in this style too:

I really loved the fashion week as this is what i have always loved doing and i definitely know i want to do this as my specialist subject.

Week 2-Textiles

On the first and second day in textiles we made drawings that we would later use for inspiration for our final piece of work.
We created images by drawing with our eyes closed, with our opposite hands and also with sticks and ink. We had short amounts of time so we couldnt get the images perfect and precise, even when we were drawing with our correct hand. Here i have added some images of what i created in these sessions.

On the afternoon of teh second day we created some monoprints using our images that we had previously done. I enjoyed doing this but after a while i got a bit fed up because they didnt look how i wanted them too and i couldnt figure out how to do it, but i did produce some okay prints.

Our final day was a lot more independent as we were creating something on our own. I liked this day most because of this. We had to create two pieces of work on a strip of cartridge paper, using inspiration from the images we had made previously. We made these completely with paper and ink, paint or pencil.
We then designed a square using the same method but with fabric this time.

I think this week was okay but it was a bit samey, as the first 2 days seemed to be full of the same thing and i didnt really understand why we were doing it but when it got to the final stage it did make more sense.

Photography

During this week we did work with different cameras to produce our own photos and we also did some work in the dark room to develop some of our photos and also to produce photo grams.

On our first day we started off by looking at a slide show of photographers from which we had to pick 3 to do some research about. We also did this at the start of every other morning, you can see the 9 photographers i picked in previous posts. We then each got an old camera and learnt how it worked, how to put the film in and also how to focus properly to get the best pictures possible. We then went out and took 6 pictures each, as there was a limit on how many the film could hold.
In the afternoon we developed our film in the dark room. To do this we put the film in a container that light couldn't enter and then we soaked the film in developer, stop chemical and a fixer. This made the images come out so we could see them on the film and also made them insensitive to light.
We then had to let these dry so we made some photo grams. This involved us putting images on top of photographic paper and exposing them to a light source for a certain amount of time, you can see some of the photo grams i made below.

On the second day we used a modern day digital camera to take 'observational' pictures. We had all morning to do this as Andy wanted a big variety of pictures from us. In the afternoon we went into the computer suite and edited our photos to make them look as good as possible. We used photo shop to do this. We then made our photos into a power point, which has been posted below.

On our third and final day we first developed our photos that we had made into a film on the first day. To do this we shone the film down onto photographic paper for a certain amount of time, so the picture would transfer onto the paper. We then developed them so that they were visible. Before we did every photo we did a test strip to see how much time each photo would need to look its best and also show all the detail. Here i have added in the pictures i developed.

In the afternoon we created light pictures, which i have uploaded below. To do this we had to leave the shutter open on the camera so that it would pick up all the light, as we moved around with torches.

I found the photography week very interesting as i had never done anything to do with photography before so it was definitely a week of learning for me. I don't think i would choose to specialise in it as it is not my strong point but it was definitely good for me to learn about it all as i may need to use it in the area i specialise in.

Steven Klein, Robert Doisneau & Henri Cartier Bresson

Steven Klein
I really like the face on this photo because it looks like a monster that should live in the sea, it actually reminded me of something you would see in Scooby Doo. I liked how intricate the design on the face was and then while the outfit is still detailed when it is placed so close to the face it looks simplified. I also liked how the background was so simple compared to the model, as it is just a grey-purple colour. I also liked how the face stood out because it is made up mostly of blue, gold and then obviously the bright red eyes while the rest of the image is made up of cool purple tones, so i think that even if the make up wasnt so stand outish and bright and detailed, it would still stand out more than everythigng else.

Robert Doisneau
I liked this image because it is completely controvesial to what people normally think of when they think of the Eiffel Tower and Paris, because people normally think of Paris as being a highly cultural place but this photo is showing something completely different from that, to me it is showing fun and relaxation, with the boys jumping into the water and then the other people sat around it. I also like how a boy jumping into the water has been captured rather than them just sat above the water, as it kind of shows the activity in action. I also liked how the background, to me, looks like block colours, with the water being a dark grey. the stairs and sky being lighter and then the eiffel tower is almost black, i like this because it doesnt take the attention away from the people in the foreground.

Henri Cartier Bresson
I liked this image because the stairs reminded me of something like aztec patterns, but it is obviously not in an aztec country, so it shows a bit of contrast and mixture between two cultures. I also like how different the stairs are to normal stairs that everyone sees everyday that are just straight up straight down, as these have lots of bends and curves in them.

Sara Moon, Sally Mann & Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman
I like how this photo has a bit of a drag queen look to it, the outfit, the make up and the hair of the woman all look like they havent been put together really well, like drag queens looks always seem to be. I also like how she doesnt seem to care what she looks like and is just lounging around looking at the camera and smirking. I also think she looks suspicious, with the way she is looking at the camera, like she has done something she shouldnt have, but is proud of it.

Sally Mann
I really liked this picture because of how interested the little girl looks in the dress even though it is obviously not made for her and is too big. I also liked how even though everything is in black and white she is the main focus on the picture because everything else is slighty blurry and out of focus. I also like how the swishy-ness of the lace in the dress could also fit in with the theme of the back ground which to me looks like the coast and the sea, which has swishy waves!
Sara Moon
I liked this photo because it kind of reminds me of an old fashioned painting, espeically because the background and the bottom of the photo arent exactly perfect. I also liked how she kind of fades into the background because she is in the same colours and shades as the back drop. I also like how muddled up and not together the photo is; the beads and colour makes it look old fashioned, the dress looks sort of vintage but then the arm decoration and the face paint make it look very modern and even sort of carnival like and i really like how it makes the girl look.

Simon Roberts, William Eggleston & Martin Parr

I like this photo mainly becaused of how laidback the woman looks. It looks like it is based a few decades back where women may not have been seen as superior people, but in this photo she looks like she doesnt have a care in the world. She is also doign something that may be thought of something that a man should do; filling the car with petrol. I just love how relaxed she is and how she looks fully confident in what she is doing.

William Eggleston
I really liked this photo because of the contrasts in it. The first one i saw was the colours in the dresses, one being blue and one being red and then how they stood out against the brown and the stony coloured wall behind. I then noticed that the girls look like they could almost be from different time eras. The one on the left looks more old fashioned because her hair is pulled back and she has a frilly dress on that covers most of her skin, then the girl on the right has more of a modern hairstyle and also a more modern dress that shows more skin. I really liked this element of it and it really set the picture off for me.

Simon Roberts
This photo caught my eye because of the reflection in the water and the fact that the colours in the water are almost as vivid as the actual buildings. I think the reason i liked this was because you dont often see reflections as sharp as what these are. I also liked the cool colours that make up all the photo. To me the photo also looks like it has a purple hue to it which to me makes it look prettier rather than just being bleak blocks of flats next to some grass and some water.

Photos i like!

Imogen Cunningham
I liked this picture because of the mysterious elements i saw in it. I think that the girl in the picture would be mysterious anyway but then the flowers and leaves are added on top and because this makes it harder to see the complete face behind i think this makes it look even more mysterious. I also think the girl looks a little scary as shes staring straight at the camera and i think could make a lot of people feel uneasy, even though she is more than likely harmless. i also love the black and white picture as i think it makes it look a lot more old fashioned and i like this effect.

Paulo Roversi
The first thing about this photo that caught my eye was the really toned down cool colours and everything that is going on such as the head piece and then theflowers coming out of her head. This photo sort of reminds me of fairies because it is kind of garden and nature based and to me the girl looks like she could be a fairy, maybe dressed up for a party. I also like how the yellow feathery things stand out agaisnt the greysih tint to her skin and also the yellowish greyish background. I also liked how in the face the only thing that stands out are the eyebrows and then everything else is toned down, so your eyes instantly go straight to that point.

Corrine Day
''if you listen carefully Capri a beautiful echo from the past can sometimes be heard beneath the waves of the present''
This photo caught my eye because the girl doesnt look all done up and photoshopped until she looks plastic like other girls do in fashion shots. This makes her look relaxed and even though to me she looks kind of sad with the way she is sat and looking down, she also looks like shes completely at ease with herself. The outfit she is wearing also caught my eye because the pink blazer and skirt completely contrast against the background as it is all shades of blue and white, so a bright pinky salmon colour really pops. I also like the photo because it reminds me of the seaside because of the colours and she seems to be wearing a summery outfit and everyone loves the seaside!
